Ludus Athletics Supports Relief Efforts in Pakistan

On January 12th, Ludus Athletics and the US Association for UNHCR will host an event to inform local philanthropists of the critical relief efforts in Pakistan. Huge areas, which included homes, farms and businesses, were destroyed by the flooding, and over twenty million people were affected. Many of the people who suffered damage were Afghan refugees living in Pakistan. At the event, UNHCR Ambassador Angelina Jolie will deliver a videotaped message explaining the situation and presenting the urgency for donor support.

Afghan-American CEO of Ludus Athletics Hamed Wardak said, “the UN Refugee Agency’s aid to Afghan refugees who have been displaced by the Pakistan floods is a cause that is close to my heart. So many members of the Afghan Diaspora are refugees in one way or another. I am pleased that I can give back, particularly through Ludus Athletics, my new eco-friendly, socially conscious active wear line.”

Hamed Wardak Contributions to USA for UNHCR

Hamed Wardak is showing his continued support and commitment to USA for UNHCR.  He have recently donated $30,000 to sponsor the 2010 World Refugee Day.  This year’s World Refugee Day program featured former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, NPR senior news analyst Daniel Schorr, former refugees and UNHCR field staff.  The event was held from June 18th-20th for the ninth consecutive year with the theme “Home” this year.

As Jud Nirenberg, Associate Director at USA for UNHCR said, “The support of Hamed Wardak have been crucial to a project helping refugee women returning to Afghanistan, typically widowed mothers, with new paths to gaining income for themselves and their families. Dozens of women have been trained and helped to start new businesses, supporting themselves and their children thanks largely to his cooperation.”

Hamed Wardak Gives Back

Looking out for the needs of the most vulnerable in Afghanistan, Hamed Wardak, the President of Ludus Athletics and founder of the political movement Fedayeen-e-Sol, has pledged $100,000 to USA for UNHCR. This is the U.S. Association for the U.N Refugee Agency.  His gift will directly help people in Afghanistan.

As Hamed Wardak explains, “I have long admired and respected the work of the UNHCR. Their work is critical in Afghanistan today. I wanted to provide support to the most disadvantaged group in Afghanistan – Afghan women.”

The money that Mr. Wardak has donated will finance programs for Afghans who were displaced as a result of the ongoing conflict, and for people now returning home who have spent years in Pakistan.  The money will, in addition, target women in need.
